Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Highway Maintenance Operative to join our team in Kamloops. This critical role involves ensuring the safety and operational efficiency of provincial highways through various maintenance activities. The successful candidate will perform a wide range of tasks, from routine repairs to emergency responses, operating specialized equipment in diverse weather conditions. This position offers premium pay for individuals committed to public service and maintaining vital infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine highway maintenance tasks including pothole patching, crack sealing, and general road surface repairs.
  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment such such as graders, excavators, loaders, snowplows, and dump trucks.
  • Conduct vegetation management, including brush cutting, tree removal, and spraying.
  • Install and repair road signs, guardrails, and other traffic control devices.
  • Respond to emergencies such as accidents, severe weather events, and natural disasters, ensuring rapid highway clearance and safety.
  • Participate in winter maintenance operations, including snow removal, de-icing, and sanding.
  • Conduct inspections of highway infrastructure to identify maintenance needs.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and regulations, ensuring a safe working environment for self and others.
  • Complete daily work reports and maintain accurate records of tasks performed and materials used.

Required Skills

  • Valid Class 3 Driver's License with Air Brake endorsement (or equivalent, e.g., Class 1 or 2 with Air Brake).
  • Proven experience in operating heavy construction or maintenance equipment.
  • Strong understanding of road maintenance principles and safety procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively in varying weather conditions and demanding environments.
  • Physical fitness to perform manual labour, lift heavy objects, and work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and public service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in highway maintenance or a related field (e.g., construction, forestry).
  • Certifications in traffic control (e.g., Traffic Control Person, Lane Closure Technician).
  • First Aid certification.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for minor equipment repairs and maintenance.
  • Experience with GIS or mapping systems for infrastructure management.
