Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Water Quality Chemist to join our Water Operations team. This critical role is centered on ensuring the highest standards of water quality for our customers, focusing on the rigorous testing, analysis, and treatment processes within a public utility framework. The successful candidate will play a vital role in maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal drinking water regulations, contributing directly to the health and safety of our community. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and non-routine chemical and microbiological analyses of raw, in-process, and finished water samples.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment, including spectrophotometers, pH meters, turbidimeters, and chromatographic systems.
- Interpret analytical data, identify trends, and prepare accurate reports for regulatory compliance and operational adjustments.
- Assist in the development and implementation of water treatment strategies to optimize water quality and plant efficiency.
- Conduct field sampling and testing at various locations within the water distribution system.
- Ensure strict adherence to all laboratory safety protocols and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures.
- Troubleshoot analytical issues and develop corrective actions as needed.
- Maintain detailed records of all analytical results, equipment maintenance, and calibration data.
- Collaborate with plant operators, engineers, and regulatory agencies on water quality matters.
- Participate in on-call rotation for emergency water quality monitoring, as required.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related scientific field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in water quality analysis, preferably within a public utility or environmental laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in standard laboratory techniques and instrumental analysis.
- Strong understanding of drinking water regulations (e.g., EPA SDWA, ADEM standards).
- Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to various field sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Chemistry or Environmental Engineering.
- State of Alabama Water Treatment Plant Operator certification (Grade I or higher).
- Experience with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or ion chromatography (IC).
- Knowledge of water treatment processes and technologies.
