Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated College Student Research Fellow with a strong interest in paleontology to join our Earth and Environmental Sciences department for a research fellowship. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in paleontological research, working alongside faculty and graduate students on ongoing projects. The fellow will be involved in various aspects of fossil preparation, identification, data analysis, and potentially field work, contributing to our understanding of ancient life and environments. This fellowship is designed to provide invaluable practical experience and mentorship for students pursuing careers in geology, biology, paleontology, or related scientific fields.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist faculty and researchers with fossil preparation, cleaning, and conservation techniques.
- Accurately document, label, and catalog paleontological specimens.
- Conduct literature reviews to support ongoing research projects.
- Enter and manage paleontological data using relevant software and databases.
- Participate in laboratory analyses, including microscopy and basic geochemical techniques, as required.
- Contribute to the preparation of research presentations or reports.
- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace.
- Potentially assist with local field excursions for fossil collection, adhering to safety protocols.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Earth Science, Biology, Geology, or a related scientific discipline.
- Demonstrated strong interest in paleontology, geology, or evolutionary biology.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently or as part of a team.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for precise data recording and specimen handling.
- Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completed coursework in paleontology, historical geology, or invertebrate zoology.
- Prior experience in a laboratory setting or with museum collections.
- Familiarity with scientific illustration or photography techniques.
- Experience with ArcGIS or other geospatial software.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform tasks requiring fine motor skills.
