Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Paleontology Field Technician to join our specialized team for upcoming projects at various Bureau of Land Management (BLM) dig sites. This is a contract position that involves extensive fieldwork, often in remote and challenging environments. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting senior paleontologists with the discovery, excavation, documentation, and recovery of fossil resources. Per diem will be provided to cover expenses incurred during fieldwork, making this an excellent opportunity for those passionate about paleontology and comfortable with travel and extended periods on-site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the systematic survey, identification, and mapping of paleontological resources in the field.
  • Participate in the excavation and recovery of fossil specimens, utilizing appropriate techniques to prevent damage.
  • Meticulously document all fieldwork activities, including detailed site descriptions, photographs, and field notes.
  • Collect and manage geological and contextual data relevant to fossil discoveries.
  • Prepare fossil specimens for transport to laboratory facilities, ensuring proper packaging and labeling.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment safely and effectively.
  • Adhere to all BLM regulations, AECOM safety protocols, and ethical guidelines for paleontological fieldwork.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, agency representatives, and other stakeholders.
  • Communicate field findings and challenges to the project lead regularly.

Required Skills

  • Basic knowledge of geology and stratigraphy, especially as it relates to fossil preservation.
  • Experience with basic field navigation and mapping techniques (GPS, compass).
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in rugged terrain and varying weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Strong attention to detail and observational skills for data collection and documentation.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • Previous experience on paleontological or archaeological field projects, particularly on BLM lands.
  • Familiarity with federal and state regulations pertaining to cultural and paleontological resources.
  • Experience with GIS software for data management and mapping.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
