Job Description
The Prosecutorial & District Attorney Intern will gain hands-on experience in the provincial prosecution process, working closely with Crown Attorneys and legal professionals. This internship offers a unique opportunity to observe and assist in various stages of criminal proceedings, from initial investigations to court appearances. Interns will contribute to case preparation, legal research, and administrative tasks essential to the effective operation of the Public Prosecution Service. This role is designed for law students seeking practical experience in criminal law and public service.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Crown Attorneys with legal research, case preparation, and document review.
- Draft legal memoranda, summaries, and other court documents under supervision.
- Organize and maintain case files, ensuring all evidence and documentation are accurately managed.
- Attend court proceedings, including trials, preliminary inquiries, and sentencing hearings, for observation and note-taking.
- Liaise with law enforcement, victims, and witnesses as directed by supervising attorneys.
- Support administrative tasks vital to the smooth functioning of the office.
- Contribute to the development of legal strategies and arguments.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all case information and office operations.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in an accredited Law program (JD or equivalent).
- Strong legal research and writing skills.
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience or coursework in criminal law or public prosecution.
- Familiarity with Nova Scotia's legal system and statutes.
- Demonstrated interest in public service and criminal justice.
- Experience with legal databases (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis).
