Job Description

We are seeking a driven Chemical Process Engineer (Chemist) with a strong plant focus to join our dynamic team in Durban. This role is crucial for optimizing and troubleshooting chemical processes within our manufacturing facilities, ensuring operational efficiency, product quality, and safety compliance. The successful candidate will leverage their expertise in chemical engineering principles to identify areas for improvement, design and implement process enhancements, and provide technical support to production teams. This position requires a hands-on approach and a commitment to continuous improvement in a fast-paced industrial environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze plant performance data to identify deviations and opportunities for process optimization.
  • Develop, evaluate, and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.
  • Conduct troubleshooting of operational issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective actions.
  • Ensure all process operations comply with safety, health, environmental, and quality standards and regulations.
  • Design and execute experiments to test new processes, materials, or equipment configurations.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed process documentation, including P&IDs, mass and energy balances, and operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including production, maintenance, and R&D, to achieve operational goals.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to plant operators and other personnel.
  • Participate in HAZOP studies and other risk assessments to ensure safe plant operation.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience in chemical process design, optimization, and troubleshooting in a manufacturing plant setting.
  • Strong understanding of chemical engineering principles, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and reaction kinetics.
  • Proficiency in process simulation software (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, PRO/II).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, PFDs, and other engineering drawings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience with distributed control systems (DCS) and process control strategies.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Project management experience, particularly in process improvement or plant expansion projects.
  • Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) registration or ECSA candidate.
