Job Description
Are you a passionate and aspiring veterinary professional eager to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic small animal clinic? Vets4Pets York is seeking a dedicated Veterinary Medicine Intern to join our team. This internship offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse yourself in the daily operations of a busy veterinary practice, learning from experienced vets and nurses. You will gain practical skills in patient care, diagnostics, surgery support, and client communication, laying a strong foundation for your future career in veterinary medicine.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinary surgeons and nurses in daily patient care, examinations, and treatments.
- Support in the preparation and monitoring of surgical procedures, ensuring sterile environments.
- Perform laboratory tasks, including sample collection, preparation, and basic analysis.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of clinic facilities, including kennels, examination rooms, and surgical suites.
- Shadow veterinarians during consultations, diagnostic imaging, and emergency procedures.
- Communicate effectively with pet owners, providing updates on patient status and post-operative care instructions.
- Administer medications as directed by veterinary staff.
- Participate in daily rounds and case discussions to enhance learning.
Required Skills
- Enrolled in or recently graduated from a Veterinary Medicine program.
- Strong passion for animal welfare and veterinary science.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
- High level of empathy and compassion towards animals and their owners.
- Basic understanding of veterinary terminology and procedures.
- Physical stamina to handle animals and perform clinic duties.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience volunteering or working in an animal care setting (e.g., shelter, boarding kennel).
- Familiarity with common veterinary software systems.
- Basic first aid certification for animals.
