Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and physically fit Goods-In Porter to join our dedicated team at NHS Lothian, based in Little France, Edinburgh. This crucial role involves the efficient unloading, sorting, and distribution of a wide variety of goods, supplies, and equipment arriving at our hospital facilities. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring that all departments receive their necessary supplies promptly and accurately, directly supporting patient care and hospital operations. This position requires significant physical activity, including lifting, carrying, and moving heavy items throughout the day. Attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to work effectively within a busy healthcare environment are paramount.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, unload, and check deliveries of goods, supplies, and equipment against delivery notes, ensuring accuracy and reporting discrepancies.
- Physically sort and organize items into appropriate storage areas, maintaining a tidy and efficient goods-in bay.
- Transport goods to various departments and wards within the hospital using appropriate equipment (e.g., trolleys, pallet trucks).
- Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations, including manual handling procedures, to ensure a safe working environment for self and others.
- Operate basic lifting and moving equipment safely and efficiently.
- Assist with inventory management tasks, including stock rotation and preparing goods for dispatch or return.
- Maintain clear communication with suppliers, colleagues, and hospital staff regarding deliveries and stock levels.
- Ensure the goods-in area is kept clean, organized, and free from hazards at all times.
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions as required.
Required Skills
- Excellent physical fitness and ability to perform demanding manual handling tasks, including regular lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills to accurately check delivery notes and manage stock.
- Strong attention to detail for verifying deliveries and identifying discrepancies.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
- Understanding and commitment to health and safety procedures.
- Good communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a goods-in, warehouse, or logistics role, particularly within a healthcare setting.
- Experience with manual handling equipment (e.g., pallet trucks, sack barrows).
- Basic IT skills for potential use of inventory systems.
