Job Description
This internship offers an unparalleled opportunity for aspiring marine mammal veterinarians to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic aquarium environment. The intern will support our veterinary team in the daily care, welfare, and medical management of a diverse collection of marine species, with a particular focus on marine mammals. This role provides exposure to preventative medicine, diagnostics, treatment protocols, and surgical assistance in an immersive learning setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Assisting veterinarians with routine health checks, examinations, and diagnostic procedures for marine mammals.
- Supporting the preparation and administration of medications and treatments as directed.
- Participating in animal husbandry tasks, including diet preparation and enclosure maintenance.
- Observing and documenting animal behavior and health status, reporting any concerns.
- Aiding in medical record keeping and inventory management for veterinary supplies.
- Assisting with necropsies and sample collection.
- Learning and adhering to strict biosecurity and safety protocols.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program.
- Demonstrated strong interest and academic background in aquatic or zoological medicine.
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong communication and documentation skills.
- Physical stamina and ability to work in various environmental conditions (wet, cold).
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience (volunteer or paid) with marine animals or in a zoological setting.
- Basic knowledge of marine mammal anatomy, physiology, and common diseases.
- Familiarity with laboratory techniques and diagnostic equipment.
- First aid and CPR certification.
