Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Trainee Arson Investigator. This entry-level position is designed for individuals with a strong desire to learn and contribute to fire scene investigations. Under the direct supervision of experienced Arson Investigators, you will receive comprehensive training in the principles and practices of fire cause and origin determination, evidence collection, interviewing techniques, and report writing. This role offers a unique opportunity to begin a challenging and rewarding career in public safety, playing a crucial role in maintaining the security of our community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior investigators in examining fire scenes to determine cause and origin.
  • Learn and apply techniques for documenting fire scenes, including photography, sketching, and note-taking.
  • Participate in the collection, preservation, and cataloging of physical evidence in accordance with legal standards.
  • Conduct preliminary interviews with witnesses, victims, and other relevant parties under supervision.
  • Assist in the preparation of detailed investigative reports and case files.
  • Attend training sessions and workshops to develop expertise in fire dynamics, investigative methodologies, and legal procedures.
  • Maintain all issued equipment and vehicles in proper working order.
  • Adhere to all departmental policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support fire investigations.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver's License.
  • Strong observational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Physical ability to navigate varied terrain and work in challenging environments (e.g., fire scenes).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in criminology, fire science, law enforcement, or a related field.
  • Prior experience or volunteer work in emergency services, security, or a related public safety area.
  • Knowledge of local bylaws and regulations pertaining to fire safety.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
