Job Description
Join the Carnegie Art Museum team as a Curation Aide, supporting our mission to connect the community with art and history. This part-time weekend position is perfect for an enthusiastic individual with a keen eye for detail and a passion for cultural preservation. You will assist the curatorial staff with various tasks essential to the care, display, and documentation of our valuable collections. This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic museum environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist curatorial staff with the handling, movement, and placement of artworks and artifacts.
- Perform basic collection care duties, including light cleaning of display cases and storage areas.
- Support inventory management and cataloging efforts by accurately recording data.
- Aid in the preparation and installation of exhibitions, including mounting and labeling.
- Organize and maintain curatorial supplies and resource materials.
- Help with condition reporting and basic conservation support under supervision.
- Ensure museum safety protocols and collection care standards are consistently followed.
- Provide general administrative support to the curatorial department as needed.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated interest in art, history, or museum studies.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Basic computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs and stand for extended periods.
- Reliable and punctual, especially for weekend shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant college program (e.g., Art History, Museum Studies, Library Science, Anthropology).
- Previous volunteer or paid experience in a museum, gallery, or archive setting.
- Familiarity with collection management software (e.g., PastPerfect, Re:discovery).
- Knowledge of basic art handling and conservation principles.
