Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Materials Scientist with a strong background in chemistry to join our advanced materials research team in Bloomington, Minnesota. This role will be integral to developing next-generation materials for critical aerospace applications, contributing to the performance and reliability of our cutting-edge products. The successful candidate will apply their expertise in chemical principles to characterize, synthesize, and optimize materials, playing a key role in the entire materials lifecycle from concept to production. Relocation assistance will be provided for qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, synthesize, and characterize novel materials and coatings with specific properties for aerospace applications.
  • Conduct in-depth chemical analysis and testing of materials using a variety of analytical techniques (e.g., spectroscopy, chromatography, thermal analysis, microscopy).
  • Lead and execute experimental projects, including planning, data collection, analysis, and interpretation of results.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, product developers, and manufacturing personnel to integrate new materials into existing and future aerospace platforms.
  • Troubleshoot material performance issues and provide scientific insights to resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Document research findings, prepare technical reports, presentations, and patent disclosures.
  • Stay abreast of new scientific and technological developments in materials science and chemistry relevant to the aerospace industry.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience (post-Ph.D.) in materials research and development, preferably in an industrial setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in organic, inorganic, or physical chemistry with a focus on materials.
  • Proficiency in various material characterization techniques (e.g., FTIR, Raman, SEM, TEM, XRD, DSC, TGA, GPC).
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a data-driven approach to research.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with materials for extreme environments (high temperature, radiation, corrosion).
  • Knowledge of aerospace material specifications and qualification processes.
  • Experience in polymer chemistry, composite materials, or advanced coatings development.
  • Proficiency with statistical analysis software and data visualization tools.
  • Track record of publications, patents, or successful technology transfer to product development.
