Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Music Copyright Specialist to join our Intellectual Property team in New Port Richey, FL. This stable role is critical for protecting the rights of our artists and the extensive catalog of musical works under Sony Music Entertainment. The specialist will be responsible for managing copyright registrations, clearances, enforcement, and catalog maintenance, ensuring compliance with evolving intellectual property laws and internal policies. This position requires a thorough understanding of music copyright principles and a proactive approach to IP management.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the complete lifecycle of music copyright registrations, including initial filing, renewals, and amendments with the U.S. Copyright Office and international bodies.
- Conduct comprehensive copyright research, including chain of title analysis and ownership verification for musical compositions and sound recordings.
- Assist in the investigation and resolution of copyright infringement claims, including drafting cease and desist letters and coordinating with legal counsel.
- Maintain and update internal copyright databases and intellectual property management systems with accurate and current information.
- Review and interpret various agreements, such as publishing, master recording, and licensing agreements, to ensure proper copyright attribution and exploitation.
- Provide support to internal teams (e.g., A&R, Licensing, Business Affairs) on copyright-related inquiries and best practices.
- Monitor global intellectual property developments and advise on potential impacts to the company's catalog and artists.
- Facilitate copyright clearances for various uses, including sync licensing, samples, and public performance.
- Collaborate with external partners, including collection societies and legal firms, on copyright matters.
- Prepare reports and presentations on copyright status, risk, and enforcement activities.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in music copyright, intellectual property, or a related field within the entertainment industry.
- Strong understanding of U.S. copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code) as it applies to musical works and sound recordings.
- Proficiency in conducting copyright research and navigating online copyright databases (e.g., U.S. Copyright Office Public Catalog).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with keen attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database management systems.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Music Business, Law, Communications, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree or Paralegal certification with a focus on Intellectual Property.
- Experience with international copyright laws and treaties (e.g., Berne Convention, WIPO Copyright Treaty).
- Familiarity with digital rights management (DRM) technologies and online content protection strategies.
- Previous experience at a record label, music publisher, or entertainment law firm.
- Fluency in a second language, particularly Spanish or French.
