Job Description

Are you passionate about wildlife, conservation, and hands-on animal care? The El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens offers an exciting internship opportunity for aspiring zoologists and animal husbandry professionals. This internship focuses specifically on the maintenance, design, and enrichment of zoo enclosures, providing an invaluable learning experience in a dynamic zoo environment. You will work closely with experienced zookeepers and facilities staff, contributing directly to the well-being of our diverse animal collection through the upkeep and enhancement of their habitats. This is an on-site, immersive learning experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist zookeepers and facilities staff in daily cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures and surrounding areas.
  • Participate in the design and construction of new enrichment devices and habitat improvements.
  • Monitor enclosure integrity and report any necessary repairs or safety concerns.
  • Support the preparation and distribution of diets, ensuring enclosures are suitable for feeding.
  • Observe animal behavior in enclosures and assist with record-keeping related to habitat usage and enrichment.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe and stimulating environment for all animals.
  • Learn and adhere to all zoo safety protocols and animal care standards.
  • Participate in educational outreach programs related to animal habitats and conservation.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, Wildlife Management, or a related field.
  • Strong passion for animal welfare and conservation.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions (lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for long periods, bending, reaching).
  • Excellent observation skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer or paid experience in an animal care setting (zoo, wildlife sanctuary, animal shelter).
  • Familiarity with AZA standards for animal care and exhibit maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of construction or landscape maintenance principles.
