Job Description
Are you passionate about working outdoors and interested in a career in grounds maintenance or gardening? UNCW is seeking a motivated Grounds Maintenance Worker / Trainee Gardener to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with little to no experience who are eager to learn and grow within a supportive environment. You will be instrumental in maintaining the beauty and health of the university’s landscapes, contributing to a pleasant atmosphere for students, faculty, and visitors alike. This role involves a variety of outdoor tasks and requires a strong work ethic and a desire to learn new skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, weeding, pruning, raking, and leaf blowing.
- Assist with planting, watering, and maintaining flowerbeds, shrubs, and trees.
- Operate and maintain basic groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and blowers.
- Learn proper techniques for plant care, soil management, and pest control.
- Participate in the installation and repair of irrigation systems as needed.
- Help keep campus pathways, parking lots, and outdoor areas clean and free of debris.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards to supervisors.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and other university staff.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Willingness to learn and take direction.
- Basic understanding of safety practices.
- Reliable and punctual.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Previous experience (even informal) with gardening or grounds work.
- A valid North Carolina driver's license (or ability to obtain one).
