Job Description

Join the California State University, Long Beach Facilities Management team as a Student Maintenance Helper. This is an exciting opportunity for students interested in learning practical handyman skills and gaining real-world experience in property maintenance and operations. Under the guidance of experienced technicians, you will assist with a variety of tasks, learning fundamental trades skills in a supportive educational environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist skilled maintenance staff with routine repairs and preventative maintenance tasks across campus facilities.
  • Perform basic handyman duties such as patching, painting, minor carpentry, and general upkeep.
  • Support with grounds maintenance, including light landscaping and debris removal.
  • Help with the setup and breakdown of campus events, requiring lifting and moving equipment.
  • Learn to safely use and maintain a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas and tools.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding task progress and challenges.
  • Attend training sessions as required to enhance technical skills and knowledge.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled as a student (part-time or full-time) in an accredited college or university program.
  • Eagerness and strong desire to learn various handyman and maintenance skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
  • Basic understanding of workplace safety or willingness to learn and adhere to safety guidelines.
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
  • Valid California Driver's License (preferred, but not strictly required for all roles).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in any manual labor, volunteer work, or hobby projects involving tools and repairs.
  • Enrollment in a trade school program (e.g., carpentry, plumbing, electrical).
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools and their safe operation.
