Job Description

Are you passionate about cutting-edge technology and eager to kickstart a career in aerial surveying? NorthWestern Energy is seeking a highly motivated Public Utilities Drone Pilot Trainee to join our dynamic team in Billings, Montana. This entry-level position offers comprehensive training in drone operation, data collection, and aerial surveying techniques crucial for maintaining our extensive public utilities infrastructure. You will work alongside experienced professionals, learning how to safely and effectively utilize UAS technology to inspect power lines, gas pipelines, and other critical assets. No prior drone piloting experience is required, but a strong desire to learn, a commitment to safety, and a good aptitude for technology are essential. Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in a structured training program to obtain FAA Part 107 certification (if not already held).
  • Learn to operate various drone platforms safely and effectively in diverse environmental conditions.
  • Assist experienced drone pilots in conducting aerial inspections and data collection for utility assets.
  • Learn to perform pre-flight checks, in-flight monitoring, and post-flight procedures.
  • Understand and adhere to all FAA regulations, company safety protocols, and operational guidelines.
  • Assist in the maintenance and proper storage of drone equipment and accessories.
  • Learn to process and organize aerial data and imagery for analysis by engineering and operations teams.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments.
  • Maintain accurate flight logs and equipment records.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to safety.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and procedures.
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn specialized software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience or strong interest in aviation, remote control aircraft, or photography.
  • Existing FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • Basic understanding of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) principles.
  • Associate's degree or certificate in a technical field (e.g., aviation, surveying, electrical technology).
