Job Description
Are you a student with a passion for ancient life and a keen eye for detail? The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County invites enthusiastic students to join our team as a Weekend Fossil Prep Volunteer at our Palmdale facility. This unique opportunity offers hands-on experience in the exciting field of paleontology, working directly with newly excavated fossils from local sites. You will learn essential laboratory techniques, contribute to scientific discovery, and help bring prehistoric creatures to life for future generations, all while receiving a paid stipend for your dedication and time.
Key Responsibilities
- Carefully clean and prepare fossil specimens using specialized tools such as air scribes, dental picks, and brushes
- Apply consolidants and adhesives to stabilize fragile fossil material under supervision
- Assist with basic data entry and cataloging of prepared specimens
- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace
- Follow all safety protocols and museum guidelines for specimen handling and lab procedures
- Communicate effectively with supervising paleontologists and fellow volunteers
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in high school, college, or university
- Strong interest in paleontology, geology, biology, or related scientific fields
- Excellent attention to detail and manual dexterity for delicate work
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently or as part of a team
- Reliable and punctual, with a commitment to weekend availability
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a laboratory setting or with detailed craft work
- Coursework in earth sciences, natural history, or museum studies
- Familiarity with basic computer data entry
- Enthusiasm for learning and contributing to scientific research
