Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and safety-conscious Underwater Welder Assistant to join our specialized marine construction team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This role is critical in supporting our experienced underwater welders on various projects, including bridge repairs, dam maintenance, pipeline installations, and structural inspections in aquatic environments. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in challenging underwater conditions, possess a strong understanding of safety protocols, and be eager to learn and develop specialized skills in underwater welding. Due to the inherent risks and demanding nature of this work, this position includes high hazard pay.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist certified underwater welders with setup, maintenance, and breakdown of diving and welding equipment.
- Perform pre-dive checks, ensuring all gear is operational and safe.
- Monitor diver air supply, communication systems, and general safety from the surface.
- Execute basic underwater tasks such as cleaning, material handling, and equipment positioning.
- Operate surface support equipment, including compressors, generators, and winches.
- Learn and practice various underwater cutting and welding techniques under direct supervision.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, both on deck and underwater.
- Adhere strictly to all company, OSHA, and ADCI safety regulations and protocols.
- Participate in daily safety briefings and debriefings.
- Provide immediate assistance during emergency situations.
Required Skills
- ADCI (Association of Diving Contractors International) commercial diving certification (or equivalent).
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive dive physical and drug screening.
- Strong swimming ability and comfort working in various aquatic environments.
- Basic knowledge of welding principles and hand tools.
- Excellent physical stamina and strength to handle heavy equipment.
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Effective communication skills and ability to follow instructions precisely.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED; vocational training in welding or marine technology is a plus.
- 1+ year of experience in a construction or industrial setting, particularly near or in water.
- Experience with underwater inspection tools and techniques.
- Familiarity with various welding processes (SMAW, FCAW) in both wet and dry conditions.
- Confined space entry certification.
- HAZWOPER certification.
