Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dynamic Theatrical Wardrobe / Costume Dresser to join our fast-paced backstage team. This role is crucial in ensuring that all performers are impeccably dressed and prepared for their cues, managing quick changes with precision, and maintaining the integrity of all costumes throughout their use. The ideal candidate thrives in a high-pressure environment, possesses exceptional organizational skills, and has a keen eye for detail. You will be an integral part of bringing our productions to life, working closely with designers, performers, and other crew members.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute rapid costume changes for performers during live productions with speed and accuracy.
- Organize, label, and maintain all costume pieces, accessories, and undergarments.
- Perform minor repairs, alterations, and steaming of costumes as needed during performances and rehearsals.
- Assist with costume fitting sessions and ensure all garments fit performers correctly.
- Launder, dry clean, and prepare costumes for subsequent performances or storage.
- Communicate effectively with performers, stage management, and costume designers regarding costume needs and issues.
- Prepare dressing rooms and quick-change areas with all necessary costume elements.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace backstage.
- Assist in the setup and strike of costume elements for productions.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in theatrical wardrobe or costume dressing.
- Strong basic sewing and repair skills (hand and machine).
- Ability to work efficiently and calmly under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Physical stamina to stand, walk, lift, and carry items frequently.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by performance schedules.
- Knowledge of costume care and cleaning techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal training in theatrical costume technology or fashion design.
- Experience with a variety of costume materials and periods.
- Prior experience in touring productions or large-scale theatrical venues.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Proficiency with common backstage communication systems (e.g., headsets).
