Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Medicinal Chemist to join our dynamic research team in Laredo, Texas. In this leadership role, you will be instrumental in driving drug discovery projects from target validation through lead optimization, contributing significantly to our pipeline of innovative therapies. You will lead a team of talented chemists, mentor junior scientists, and foster an environment of scientific excellence and collaboration. Key Responsibilities
- Lead medicinal chemistry efforts for assigned drug discovery programs, from hit-to-lead to candidate selection.
- Design and synthesize novel small molecules with optimal drug-like properties, guided by SAR and SBDD principles.
- Manage and mentor a team of medicinal chemists, providing scientific guidance and professional development.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with biology, DMPK, pharmacology, and toxicology teams to advance projects.
- Present research findings internally and externally, contributing to scientific publications and patent applications.
- Oversee external CRO relationships for synthetic chemistry and lead optimization activities.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery technologies.
- Contribute to strategic planning and decision-making for portfolio progression.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry.
- Minimum of 7 years of industry experience in medicinal chemistry, with a proven track record of advancing drug discovery projects.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including direct supervision or mentoring of scientific staff.
- Expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, reaction mechanism, and modern analytical techniques (NMR, MS, HPLC).
- Strong understanding of ADME/DMPK principles and their application in medicinal chemistry.
- Proficiency in structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis and structure-based drug design (SBDD).
- Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Postdoctoral experience in a relevant field.
- Experience in a specific therapeutic area relevant to Gilead's pipeline (e.g., oncology, virology, immunology).
- Experience with computational chemistry tools and techniques.
- Proven record of scientific publications and patent inventorship.
