Job Description
We are seeking a talented and dedicated Scientific Illustrator with a specialization in Paleontology to join our dynamic team. This role requires exceptional artistic skill combined with a deep understanding of paleontological subjects and scientific accuracy. The ideal candidate will be proficient in both traditional and digital illustration techniques, capable of bringing ancient life and environments to vivid life for research, educational materials, and museum exhibits. You will collaborate closely with paleontologists and researchers to create detailed and anatomically correct illustrations that convey complex scientific information.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce highly accurate and detailed illustrations of fossils, ancient organisms, and paleoenvironments using both digital software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) and traditional media (e.g., pen and ink, watercolor).
- Collaborate directly with paleontologists, researchers, and exhibit designers to ensure scientific accuracy and meet project specifications.
- Translate complex scientific data, anatomical structures, and ecological concepts into visually compelling and understandable illustrations.
- Prepare illustrations for a variety of outputs including scientific publications, museum exhibits, educational materials, and online platforms.
- Maintain and manage an archive of original artwork and digital files.
- Participate in occasional field expeditions to create on-site sketches and gather reference materials.
- Stay current with best practices in scientific illustration, paleontological discoveries, and digital art technologies.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in digital illustration software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Painter).
- Demonstrated expertise in traditional illustration techniques (e.g., drawing, painting, ink rendering).
- Strong understanding of vertebrate and invertebrate paleontology, anatomy, and taphonomy.
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to scientific accuracy.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in a research-oriented environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A portfolio showcasing a strong body of scientific illustration work, particularly in paleontology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Scientific Illustration, Fine Arts with a scientific focus, or a related field.
- Experience working in a museum, university, or research institution setting.
- Familiarity with 3D modeling and rendering software (e.g., ZBrush, Blender, Maya).
- Experience with print production and preparing files for various media.
