Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Psychiatric Nurse (RN) to join our team at a state-of-the-art mental health facility in Portland, Maine. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse looking for a stable and rewarding career in psychiatric care. The successful candidate will be instrumental in providing direct patient care, administering medications, conducting therapeutic interventions, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized treatment plans for adults and adolescents experiencing acute and chronic mental health conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care for individuals with psychiatric disorders.
  • Administer medications safely and accurately, monitor for side effects, and educate patients and families about their medication regimen.
  • Conduct therapeutic individual and group sessions, focusing on coping skills, medication management, and symptom reduction.
  • Observe and assess patient behavior, mental status, and emotional needs, documenting all observations and interventions accurately.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and revise patient-centered treatment plans.
  • Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff, adhering to all safety protocols and regulatory guidelines.
  • Participate in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques as needed.
  • Educate patients and their families on mental health conditions, treatment options, and discharge planning.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold ethical standards of practice.

Required Skills

  • Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Maine.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an RN, with at least 1 year in a psychiatric or mental health setting.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in administering medications and understanding psychopharmacology.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage challenging patient behaviors and de-escalate crises.
  • BLS certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
  • Certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (PMH-RN).
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems specific to mental health.
  • Prior experience working with diverse patient populations.
