Job Description

We are seeking a highly detail-oriented and linguistically-adept Pronunciation Checker to join our Language Technology team. In this role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the accuracy and quality of pronunciation models used across our suite of language-focused applications. You will meticulously review, analyze, and provide feedback on synthetic speech outputs, focusing on phonetic accuracy, naturalness, and adherence to specific linguistic rules for various languages. This position requires a keen ear, an understanding of phonetics, and a passion for improving user experience in language learning and communication tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed phonetic and prosodic analysis of synthesized speech for multiple languages.
  • Identify and document pronunciation errors, inconsistencies, and areas for improvement in our AI models.
  • Collaborate closely with AI/ML engineers, linguists, and product managers to provide actionable feedback.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive test cases and quality assurance protocols for pronunciation features.
  • Contribute to the refinement of phonetic dictionaries and rule sets.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in speech technology and natural language processing.
  • Assist in user acceptance testing (UAT) for new language features and updates.

Required Skills

  • Strong understanding of phonetics and phonology, with experience in IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet).
  • Excellent attention to detail and a keen ear for linguistic nuances.
  • Proficiency in analyzing speech waveforms and identifying articulation issues.
  • Experience with quality assurance processes, particularly in software or linguistic data.
  • Ability to articulate complex linguistic issues clearly and concisely to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Basic understanding of statistical models or machine learning principles as they apply to speech technology.
  • Fluency in English (US English) and strong written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Speech Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with speech synthesis (TTS) or automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems.
  • Proficiency in one or more additional languages beyond English, particularly those with complex phonetic systems.
  • Familiarity with linguistic annotation tools and databases.
  • Experience in a software development or tech environment.
