Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented 3D Scanning Technician with a specialized focus on fossil preservation to join our research and collections team. This role is critical for the digital documentation and long-term preservation of our extensive paleontological collections. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating advanced 3D scanning equipment, processing raw scan data, and preparing high-quality digital models of fossils for research, education, and public engagement. This is an on-site position requiring hands-on interaction with delicate specimens.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain various 3D scanning technologies (e.g., structured light, laser scanners) to capture high-resolution data from fossil specimens.
  • Perform post-processing of 3D scan data, including alignment, merging, cleaning, and mesh generation, using specialized software.
  • Create accurate and aesthetically pleasing digital 3D models of fossils, ensuring fidelity to the original specimens.
  • Develop and implement standardized protocols for 3D scanning, data management, and digital archival of fossil collections.
  • Collaborate with paleontologists, geologists, and collections managers to prioritize scanning projects and integrate digital assets into research workflows.
  • Provide technical support and training to researchers and students on 3D scanning techniques and software.
  • Assist in the preparation and handling of delicate fossil specimens for scanning, adhering to best practices for collection care.
  • Document workflows, metadata, and quality control measures for all digital assets.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of digital models through online platforms and publications.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in operating 3D scanning hardware (e.g., Artec, Faro, GOM) and associated software.
  • Strong experience with 3D data processing software (e.g., Geomagic Wrap, MeshLab, ZBrush, Blender).
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality 3D models from raw scan data.
  • Familiarity with digital preservation principles and practices.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with delicate scientific specimens.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Paleontology, Archaeology, Museum Studies, Digital Media, or a related scientific/technical field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in 3D scanning or digital imaging, preferably with natural history collections.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with photogrammetry techniques for 3D reconstruction.
  • Knowledge of paleontological terminology and specimen preparation techniques.
  • Prior experience working in a museum, university, or research institution setting.
  • Ability to troubleshoot scanning equipment and software issues.
  • Experience with scripting or programming for automation of data processing (e.g., Python).
