Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Part-time Transition Mentor to join our Military & Veteran Services team. This critical role involves providing personalized guidance, support, and mentorship to student veterans as they navigate their transition into higher education and civilian careers. The mentor will help veterans identify and access campus resources, develop academic and professional skills, and build a strong support network. This position requires an individual who understands the unique challenges faced by military personnel and veterans, offering empathy, practical advice, and encouragement.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one mentorship and guidance to student veterans, focusing on academic, social, and career transition.
- Assist veterans in identifying and accessing university resources, including academic advising, financial aid, mental health services, and career development.
- Facilitate workshops and group sessions on topics relevant to veteran success, such as time management, study skills, resume building, and networking.
- Act as a liaison between student veterans and university departments to advocate for their needs and resolve issues.
- Monitor mentee progress and provide ongoing support to ensure successful academic and personal outcomes.
- Maintain accurate records of interactions and activities in compliance with university policies.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of veteran support programs and initiatives.
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of military culture and veteran transition challenges.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Ability to build rapport and trust with diverse individuals.
- Empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental approach.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in basic office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
Preferred Qualifications
- Veteran status or significant experience working directly with the military and veteran community.
- Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Education, or a related field.
- Experience in mentorship, coaching, or advising roles within an educational or social service setting.
- Familiarity with higher education systems and student support services.
