Job Description
SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Paleontology Mitigation Project Manager to join our dynamic team in Irvine, CA. This is a unique opportunity for career growth within a supportive and collaborative environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing all phases of paleontological resource projects, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. You will lead field crews, coordinate with clients, agencies, and subcontractors, and oversee report preparation, contributing to the protection and discovery of significant paleontological resources across various development projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage paleontological resource assessment and mitigation projects from proposal to completion.
- Develop scopes of work, budgets, and schedules, and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
- Lead and supervise paleontological field crews, including monitoring, data recovery, and laboratory processing.
- Ensure compliance with relevant environmental regulations, including CEQA, NEPA, and local ordinances.
- Serve as the primary client contact, fostering strong relationships and effective communication.
- Prepare and review technical reports, permit applications, and other project deliverables.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to team development and training initiatives.
- Participate in business development activities, including proposal writing and client outreach.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in paleontological resource management or mitigation.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex paleontological projects in California.
- Thorough understanding of federal, state, and local paleontological resource regulations (e.g., CEQA, NEPA, BLM, USFS, CPUC).
- Proficiency in paleontological field methods, including survey, monitoring, and data recovery techniques.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Valid driver's license and ability to conduct fieldwork, including travel and overnight stays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field.
- Experience with GIS and GPS technologies for mapping and data collection.
- Registration as a Qualified Paleontologist under relevant agency guidelines.
- Previous experience with business development and client acquisition.
- Advanced knowledge of California's Cenozoic stratigraphy and fossil record.
