Job Description
Join AECOM’s dynamic environmental team as a Paleontology Field Technician. This contract position is crucial for our projects involving the survey, monitoring, and excavation of paleontological resources on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sites. You will work under the direction of a qualified paleontologist, contributing to significant discoveries and ensuring compliance with federal regulations. This role requires extensive fieldwork, often in remote and challenging conditions, with per diem included for eligible project travel. We are looking for dedicated individuals passionate about paleontology and committed to rigorous scientific methodology.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct paleontological surveys and monitoring during ground-disturbing activities on BLM lands and other project sites.
- Perform controlled excavations and recovery of fossil resources under the supervision of a lead paleontologist.
- Document findings thoroughly using standardized forms, photographic records, and GPS coordinates.
- Prepare preliminary fossil identifications and assist with field specimen conservation.
- Maintain field equipment and ensure adherence to health and safety protocols.
- Collaborate effectively with project managers, clients, and other team members.
- Transport and curate recovered specimens to designated laboratory facilities.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field OR equivalent field experience.
- Minimum 6 months of paleontological field experience, including survey and excavation techniques.
- Ability to identify common fossil types and geological formations.
- Proficiency with field documentation methods, including mapping, photography, and GPS use.
- Strong physical stamina and ability to work long hours in varying outdoor conditions, often in remote locations.
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on BLM-managed lands or other federal projects.
- Knowledge of federal and state cultural resource management regulations (e.g., NEPA, NHPA, PRPA).
- Familiarity with California paleontology and geology.
- Basic first aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with GIS software for data collection and mapping.
