Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Paleontology Field Lead to oversee and manage paleontological resources for energy and pipeline infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will lead fieldwork efforts, manage field crews, conduct fossil identification and recovery, ensure compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., CEQA, NEPA), and contribute to technical reports. This role requires a strong background in vertebrate paleontology, exceptional leadership skills, and a commitment to safety and quality in a field-intensive environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise paleontological field crews on energy and pipeline project sites.
  • Conduct field surveys, monitoring, and data collection for paleontological resources.
  • Perform fossil identification, collection, preparation, and curation according to professional standards.
  • Ensure strict adherence to project specifications, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements (e.g., CEQA, NEPA, BLM, USACE).
  • Prepare daily field reports, summary reports, and contribute to larger technical documents.
  • Manage project logistics, including equipment, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and project managers.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to junior staff.
  • Maintain accurate records and digital databases of field activities and findings.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in paleontological fieldwork and resource management.
  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a related scientific field.
  • Demonstrated experience leading field crews and managing projects.
  • Expertise in identifying fossil vertebrates and invertebrates from various geological periods.
  • Proficiency with GPS, GIS, and other field data collection technologies.
  • Strong understanding of federal and state environmental regulations (e.g., CEQA, NEPA) pertaining to paleontological resources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and client interaction.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in challenging outdoor environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Paleontology or a closely related field.
  • Experience specifically on energy, oil & gas, or pipeline infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with permit acquisition and agency coordination.
  • Certification in first aid and CPR.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
