Job Description
We are seeking experienced and highly reliable Oversize Load Pilot Drivers to join our network as independent contractors for escort vehicle services. This is a 100% remote contract position, allowing you to operate from your preferred base while supporting Landstar’s vast network of specialized freight movements across North America. As a Pilot Driver, you will be critical in ensuring the safe and efficient transport of oversized loads, providing essential escort and warning services to comply with state and federal regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a well-maintained escort vehicle in accordance with all local, state, and federal regulations for oversize/overweight loads.
- Communicate effectively with truck drivers, project managers, and law enforcement regarding route conditions, hazards, and traffic flow.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of escort vehicle and equipment, ensuring readiness for each assignment.
- Provide clear and concise warnings to oncoming traffic and ensure safe passage through tight spots, intersections, and construction zones.
- Manage necessary paperwork, including permits, logbooks, and incident reports.
- Maintain a professional appearance and conduct, representing Landstar's commitment to safety and excellence.
- Be available for assignments on varying schedules, including potential nights, weekends, and holidays, based on load requirements.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and participate in ongoing safety training as required.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as an oversize load pilot/escort driver.
- Valid Class C (or equivalent) Driver's License with a clean driving record.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations, state-specific oversize load laws, and permitting requirements across multiple states.
- Proficiency in using two-way radios, CBs, and other communication devices.
- Strong observational skills and ability to anticipate potential hazards.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in dynamic environments.
- Ownership of a fully equipped and compliant escort vehicle (pilot car).
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Pilot Car Operator (CPCO) or equivalent state-specific certifications.
- Experience with diverse types of oversize cargo (e.g., wind turbine components, heavy machinery, modular homes).
- Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and digital dispatch systems.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for minor vehicle troubleshooting on the road.
