Job Description

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is seeking a passionate and detail-oriented Museum Curatorial Assistant for our Earth Sciences department. This entry-level position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation, research, and exhibition of our extensive collection of geological and paleontological specimens. The successful candidate will work closely with curators and other museum staff to support various departmental activities, gaining invaluable experience in museum operations and earth science curation. This role is ideal for individuals eager to start a career in museum studies or earth sciences, providing a foundational understanding of collection management, research support, and public education within a world-class institution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist curators with the organization, documentation, and care of earth science collections, including minerals, fossils, and rocks.
  • Perform data entry and maintain accurate records of specimens using collection management software.
  • Support the preparation of specimens for research, exhibition, and loans.
  • Aid in the inventory and rehousing of collection materials to ensure their long-term preservation.
  • Conduct basic research to support curatorial projects and exhibition development.
  • Assist with the installation and de-installation of exhibits related to earth sciences.
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding the collections under supervision.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to ongoing projects.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, Paleontology, Museum Studies, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in natural history museums and earth sciences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer or internship experience in a museum, archive, or laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with collection management systems (e.g., Specify, EMu).
  • Basic knowledge of specimen handling and preservation techniques.
  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 25 lbs.
