Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Mitigation Paleontology Lead to join our dynamic Environmental Planning and Permitting team, with a primary focus on CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) projects across California. This role will involve leading paleontological resource management efforts, from pre-construction surveys and impact assessments to mitigation monitoring and post-excavation analysis. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with CEQA and other relevant regulations, managing project budgets and schedules, and fostering strong client relationships. Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as Lead Paleontologist for CEQA-driven projects throughout California, including overseeing field operations, lab work, and report preparation.
  • Develop and implement paleontological resource mitigation plans and monitoring programs in compliance with CEQA, NEPA, and local agency requirements.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and deliverables to ensure successful project execution and client satisfaction.
  • Conduct paleontological resource assessments, prepare technical reports, and contribute to environmental impact reports (EIRs) and negative declarations (NDs).
  • Supervise and mentor junior paleontologists, field technicians, and subcontractors.
  • Liaise with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to coordinate project activities and secure necessary permits.
  • Perform fossil identification, curation, and cataloging according to professional standards.
  • Contribute to business development activities, including proposal writing and client outreach.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in paleontological resource management, with a strong emphasis on CEQA projects in California.
  • Demonstrated expertise in California stratigraphy and paleontology.
  • Extensive experience in paleontological field survey, excavation, monitoring, and laboratory methods.
  • Proficiency in preparing high-quality paleontological technical reports, mitigation plans, and contributions to environmental documents.
  • Thorough understanding of CEQA, NEPA, and other relevant federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to paleontological resources.
  • Strong project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and team supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting, client interaction, and presentations.
  • Ability to travel regularly for fieldwork and client meetings throughout California.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Paleontology or a closely related field.
  • Paleontological Permitting experience with agencies such as BLM, USFS, State Parks, and local jurisdictions.
  • Experience with GIS software for mapping and data analysis.
  • Previous experience working for a major environmental consulting firm.
  • Registered Professional Geologist (PG) or Certified Paleontologist (if applicable in California).
