Job Description

AECOM is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mitigation Paleontology Lead to join our dynamic team, focusing on CEQA and California-based projects. This is a critical leadership role responsible for managing paleontological resources during development and infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, particularly the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The successful candidate will lead project teams, develop mitigation strategies, oversee fieldwork, and prepare comprehensive technical reports. While the project focus is California, this position will be based out of our Baltimore, MD office, working in a hybrid model that combines office presence with potential travel to project sites as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all aspects of paleontological resource management projects from inception to completion, with a strong emphasis on California projects and CEQA compliance.
  • Develop and implement paleontological mitigation plans, monitoring programs, and data recovery strategies.
  • Conduct and/or oversee paleontological field surveys, monitoring, and data recovery efforts.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, environmental impact statements/reports (EIS/EIRs), and other regulatory documents.
  • Serve as a primary liaison with clients, regulatory agencies (e.g., California Geological Survey, federal agencies), and project stakeholders.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and resources effectively.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff.
  • Contribute to business development activities, including proposal writing and client outreach.
  • Ensure adherence to all safety protocols and industry best practices.

Required Skills

  • Expertise in California paleontology, stratigraphy, and fossil identification.
  • Thorough understanding of CEQA, NEPA, and other relevant federal, state, and local environmental regulations related to paleontological resources.
  • Proven experience in managing and leading paleontological mitigation projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare comprehensive technical reports and proposals.
  • Proficiency in GIS software and data management.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct strenuous fieldwork in various environmental conditions.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
  • Certification as a CEQA professional.
  • Experience with other state-specific paleontological regulations beyond California.
  • Prior experience in a consulting environment.
  • Publications or presentations in relevant scientific fields.
