Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Facility Porter to join our vital team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the safe and respectful transport of patients, equipment, and supplies within our mental health facilities. Your ability to maintain a calm and reassuring presence is paramount, especially when interacting with vulnerable patients, ensuring their comfort and safety at all times. This position requires vigilance, physical stamina, and a deep commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and care in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely and compassionately transport patients, including those requiring secure escort, to and from various departments, appointments, and therapy sessions.
  • Move equipment, furniture, medical supplies, specimens, and patient belongings efficiently and securely.
  • Respond promptly to emergency calls and assist clinical staff as required.
  • Maintain a calm, professional, and reassuring demeanour when interacting with patients, visitors, and staff, particularly in stressful situations.
  • Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Ensure effective communication with nursing staff and other departments regarding patient transfers and logistical needs.
  • Assist with patient transfers from beds to chairs, trolleys, and other mobility aids.
  • Undertake regular checks of equipment and report any faults or maintenance requirements.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to listen and reassure.
  • Proven ability to remain calm, patient, and empathetic under pressure.
  • Good physical fitness and stamina to handle duties involving standing, walking, lifting, and pushing.
  • A strong sense of responsibility and commitment to safety.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety principles and infection control.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Reliability and punctuality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a healthcare, mental health, or secure environment.
  • Experience in a customer service role requiring calm interaction with the public.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or First Aid certification.
  • Relevant NVQ Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care or equivalent.
