Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Forensic Analyst to join our esteemed State Crime Lab team in Wesley Chapel, FL. This pivotal role involves leading complex forensic analyses, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring the highest standards of scientific integrity and quality are maintained. The successful candidate will specialize in a specific forensic discipline (e.g., DNA, Firearms, Toxicology) and will be responsible for providing expert testimony in court, maintaining laboratory accreditation standards, and contributing to the continuous improvement of forensic methodologies and practices. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and conduct complex forensic analyses in a designated discipline (e.g., DNA, latent prints, toxicology, trace evidence, firearms) for criminal investigations.
  • Perform technical and administrative review of casework, ensuring compliance with established protocols, quality control, and accreditation standards.
  • Provide expert witness testimony in court proceedings, effectively communicating complex scientific findings to legal professionals and juries.
  • Mentor, train, and provide technical guidance to junior forensic analysts and support staff.
  • Manage laboratory equipment, ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Develop, validate, and implement new analytical methods and instrumentation as required.
  • Participate in proficiency testing and internal/external audits to maintain laboratory accreditation (e.g., ANAB, ISO 17025).
  • Prepare comprehensive and accurate laboratory reports, documentation, and case files.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and other stakeholders.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and quality assurance procedures.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Forensic Analyst in a state or accredited crime laboratory.
  • Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a closely related natural science discipline.
  • Proficiency in forensic analytical techniques relevant to a specialized discipline (e.g., PCR, DNA sequencing, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, comparative microscopy).
  • Demonstrated ability to provide expert testimony in court.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory accreditation standards (e.g., ANAB, ISO 17025).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a high-pressure environment.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and standard office software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Forensic Science or a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Certification by a recognized professional organization (e.g., ABC, IAI).
  • Experience with method validation and development.
  • Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a forensic laboratory.
  • Familiarity with Florida state statutes and legal procedures related to forensic evidence.
