Job Description

Are you a recent graduate with a passion for chemistry and a desire to kick-start your career in a dynamic laboratory environment? Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a highly motivated Junior Analytical Chemist to join our team in Shockoe Bottom, Richmond. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals eager to learn and grow, as comprehensive training on state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation, including High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), will be provided. You will play a crucial role in supporting our analytical testing operations, ensuring the quality and integrity of our products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine chemical analysis using established methods and procedures.
  • Receive comprehensive training and hands-on experience with HPLC and GC-MS instrumentation.
  • Prepare samples, reagents, and standards according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Document experimental data accurately and maintain detailed laboratory notebooks.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment under supervision.
  • Assist in troubleshooting analytical instrumentation issues.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and good laboratory practices (GLP/GMP as applicable).
  • Interpret and report analytical results to senior chemists.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of general chemistry principles.
  • Eagerness to learn and develop practical laboratory skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow precise instructions and work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior hands-on laboratory experience (academic or internship) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques such as chromatography (HPLC, GC) or spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR).
