Job Description
Join Martin Marietta’s environmental team as a Fossil Recovery Specialist with a strong focus on heavy equipment operations. This unique role blends scientific expertise in paleontology with practical experience in supervising or operating heavy machinery during excavation projects. You will be responsible for identifying, recovering, and documenting fossilized remains discovered during quarrying and construction activities, ensuring compliance with all regulatory guidelines and internal protocols. This position requires a vigilant eye, strong communication skills, and an unwavering commitment to safety and scientific integrity.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor excavation sites for potential fossil discoveries.
- Oversee or directly participate in the careful recovery and documentation of fossilized specimens using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Collaborate with heavy equipment operators to ensure safe and efficient excavation around sensitive areas.
- Document findings meticulously, including geological context, photographic records, and detailed field notes.
- Prepare and package recovered specimens for transport to designated storage or research facilities.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to fossil discovery and protection.
- Provide training and guidance to field teams on fossil identification and initial response protocols.
- Maintain and organize recovery equipment and supplies.
- Conduct preliminary assessments of paleontological resources on project sites.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (3+ years) in paleontological fieldwork and fossil recovery.
- Demonstrated understanding of heavy equipment operations (excavators, bulldozers, loaders) and site safety protocols.
- Ability to identify a wide range of fossil types and geological formations.
- Proficiency in field documentation, including mapping, photography, and detailed note-taking.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to dynamic field conditions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with diverse teams.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate company vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a related field.
- OSHA 10 or 30-hour certification.
- Certification or demonstrable experience operating heavy machinery.
- Experience with GIS software for site mapping and data management.
- Prior experience working in industrial settings (quarries, construction sites).
