Job Description

Join the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) as a Fossil Park Program Leader for an exciting summer season! This role is based at our dynamic outdoor education center in Miller Beach, Gary, Indiana. As a Program Leader, you will be responsible for developing, leading, and overseeing engaging educational programs focused on paleontology, geology, and local ecology for diverse groups, including children, families, and community organizations. This is an incredible opportunity to share your passion for natural history in a hands-on, outdoor setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver interpretive programs and guided tours on fossil identification, geological processes, and local ecosystems.
  • Lead educational activities and workshops for school groups, summer camps, and public visitors.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all program participants in an outdoor environment.
  • Assist with the development of new educational materials and program content.
  • Maintain program equipment and supplies, ensuring they are clean and functional.
  • Collaborate with park staff to promote programs and enhance visitor experiences.
  • Provide excellent customer service and act as a knowledgeable ambassador for the park and IDNR.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of paleontology, geology, or environmental science.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and engage groups in outdoor settings.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Passion for outdoor education and natural history.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences, Education, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working in a park, museum, or outdoor education center.
  • Experience with curriculum development for educational programs.
  • Lifeguard certification or wilderness first aid training.
  • Proficiency in a second language.
