Job Description

Join the United States Forest Service as a Paleontology Technician and embark on an exciting outdoor career path dedicated to the discovery, protection, and management of America’s paleontological resources. As a Paleontology Technician, you will play a crucial role in field surveys, fossil excavation, data collection, and site monitoring across national forests and grasslands. You will work under the supervision of professional paleontologists, contributing directly to scientific research and conservation efforts. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct paleontological field surveys, including pedestrian surveys and shovel testing, to identify potential fossil localities.
  • Assist with the excavation, collection, stabilization, and documentation of fossils and associated geological data.
  • Operate GPS and GIS equipment for mapping and data recording of paleontological sites and finds.
  • Maintain detailed field notes, photographs, and inventory records of collected specimens and site conditions.
  • Assist in the preparation of specimens for curation and long-term storage in approved repositories.
  • Monitor known paleontological sites for erosion, disturbance, and unauthorized collection.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal and agency regulations regarding paleontological resource management.
  • Maintain field equipment and vehicles in good working order.
  • Participate in safety briefings and adhere strictly to all safety protocols for fieldwork.

Required Skills

  • Strong aptitude for outdoor fieldwork in varied terrain and weather conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of geology, paleontology, or related earth sciences.
  • Proficiency in using GPS devices for navigation and data collection.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, including hiking, lifting, and digging.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid state driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • Previous experience in paleontological, archaeological, or geological fieldwork.
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for data processing and map creation.
  • Knowledge of federal laws and regulations pertaining to cultural and paleontological resource management (e.g., Paleontological Resources Preservation Act).
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Ability to operate all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) or other off-road equipment.
