Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and reliable Blood Bank Porter to join our critical delivery team in Canterbury. This is an urgent vacancy for a role that is fundamental to the life-saving work of the NHS. As a Blood Bank Porter, you will be responsible for the timely and safe transportation of blood and blood components, samples, and equipment between the blood bank, laboratories, wards, and other hospital departments. Your role ensures that vital supplies reach patients when they need them most, directly impacting patient outcomes. This fast-paced environment requires exceptional attention to detail, adherence to strict protocols, and a strong sense of urgency.
Key Responsibilities
- Transport blood and blood components, samples, and laboratory equipment securely and efficiently.
- Ensure timely delivery to wards, operating theatres, laboratories, and other specified locations.
- Adhere to strict safety guidelines and handling protocols for all blood products.
- Maintain accurate records of all transfers and deliveries.
- Operate hospital vehicles (vans) for external deliveries if required, adhering to road safety regulations.
- Assist with stock rotation, inventory checks, and the proper storage of blood products.
- Communicate effectively with blood bank staff, laboratory personnel, and ward teams.
- Ensure the cleanliness and proper maintenance of delivery equipment and vehicles.
- Respond to urgent requests and prioritize tasks to meet critical deadlines.
Required Skills
- Full, clean UK driving license (essential)
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- High level of reliability, punctuality, and responsibility
- Ability to follow precise instructions and protocols
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Physical ability to lift, push, and move items safely
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and prioritize urgent tasks
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a healthcare or hospital environment
- Prior experience in a delivery, courier, or logistics role
- Knowledge of medical terminology and handling of biological samples
- Basic First Aid certification
