Job Description
Are you a motivated and responsible 15-year-old looking for an exciting and impactful summer job? Des Moines Parks and Recreation is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Lifeguard Trainees for the upcoming summer season. This is an incredible opportunity to learn essential life-saving skills, gain valuable work experience, and contribute to the safety and enjoyment of our community’s aquatic facilities. We provide comprehensive training and support to help you become a certified lifeguard. This temporary, seasonal role offers a chance to make a real difference while enjoying the summer outdoors.
Key Responsibilities
- Actively participate in and complete all required lifeguard training and certification courses provided by Des Moines Parks and Recreation.
- Learn and practice emergency procedures, including water rescues, first aid, and CPR.
- Assist certified lifeguards in maintaining a safe aquatic environment by observing swimmers and enforcing pool rules under direct supervision.
- Assist with the setup and cleanup of pool areas, ensuring cleanliness and organization.
- Communicate effectively with patrons and staff regarding pool safety and regulations.
- Report any incidents, accidents, or unsafe conditions to a supervising lifeguard or pool manager immediately.
- Maintain a professional and positive demeanor at all times.
- Adhere to all Des Moines Parks and Recreation policies and procedures.
Required Skills
- Must be 15 years old by the start of the summer season.
- Strong swimming abilities, including proficiency in various strokes and comfort in deep water.
- Ability to tread water for extended periods.
- Excellent vision and hearing (corrected if necessary).
- Strong sense of responsibility and alertness.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience participating in swim teams, lessons, or water sports.
- Basic knowledge of first aid or eagerness to learn.
- A positive attitude and a passion for community service.
- Ability to commit to the full summer seasonal schedule.
