Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Forest Service Paleontology Technician to join our team. This position offers an incredible opportunity to work outdoors, contributing directly to the discovery, recovery, and preservation of paleontological resources across national forest lands. As a technician, you will be involved in all phases of fieldwork, from survey and excavation to preliminary analysis and documentation. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct paleontological surveys and inventories in diverse outdoor environments.
  • Assist with fossil excavation, recovery, and stabilization following established protocols.
  • Accurately record field data, including stratigraphic information, GPS coordinates, and photographic documentation.
  • Prepare preliminary reports and contribute to data entry and management.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment safely and effectively.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and environmental protection guidelines.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including archaeologists, geologists, and forest managers.
  • Assist with public outreach and educational activities regarding paleontological resources.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of geological principles and paleontological concepts.
  • Ability to work effectively in challenging outdoor conditions (uneven terrain, varying weather).
  • Proficiency in using field tools and equipment (e.g., GPS, shovels, picks, brushes).
  • Strong attention to detail for data collection and documentation.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Physical stamina for strenuous fieldwork.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Geology, Paleontology, Anthropology, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in paleontological fieldwork or archaeological surveys.
  • Familiarity with federal land management agencies and regulations.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Experience with GIS software for mapping and data analysis.
