Job Description
UCLA’s Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Paleontology Research Assistant to contribute to ongoing projects focused on fossil discovery, preparation, and analysis in the Southern California region. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work alongside leading paleontologists on significant scientific endeavors, exploring ancient ecosystems and contributing to our understanding of evolutionary history. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in both laboratory and field-based research activities, assisting with all facets of paleontological investigation from excavation to publication.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist faculty and graduate students with paleontological fieldwork, including excavation, fossil collection, site documentation, and mapping.
- Perform meticulous preparation and conservation of fossil specimens using a variety of tools and techniques.
- Maintain and organize fossil collections, ensuring accurate cataloging and database entry.
- Conduct preliminary data analysis, literature reviews, and assist with report and manuscript preparation.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring a safe and efficient research environment.
- Prepare presentations, posters, and other outreach materials as needed.
- Assist with grant proposal writing and project administration.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and ethical guidelines in both field and lab settings.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Paleontology, or a related scientific field.
- Demonstrated experience in fossil preparation and/or paleontological fieldwork.
- Proficiency in scientific data entry and database management.
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a research team.
- Physical ability to perform fieldwork in varied terrain and weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology or a closely related field.
- Prior experience with GIS software for mapping and data visualization.
- Experience operating specialized paleontological equipment (e.g., micro-CT scanner, SEM).
- Familiarity with scientific illustration or photography techniques.
- Valid California driver's license with a clean driving record.
