Job Description

The Fossil Park Program Leader will play a crucial role in our summer outdoor education initiatives, specifically focusing on the engagement and learning experiences at our designated Fossil Park. This temporary position is perfect for individuals passionate about natural history, paleontology, and sharing knowledge with diverse age groups in an interactive, outdoor setting. You will be responsible for leading educational programs, guiding visitors through fossil discovery activities, and ensuring a safe and enriching experience for all participants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver engaging outdoor education programs focused on paleontology and geology at the Fossil Park.
  • Lead guided tours and hands-on fossil identification activities for school groups, families, and the general public.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all program participants, adhering to park policies and procedures.
  • Educate visitors on park rules, conservation efforts, and the importance of preserving natural heritage.
  • Assist in the maintenance and inventory of educational materials and park equipment related to the Fossil Park.
  • Collaborate with other park staff and volunteers to enhance visitor experiences.
  • Provide excellent customer service and act as a positive representative of the Metro Parks system.
  • Collect and report program participation data as required.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in outdoor education, environmental science, or related fields.
  • Strong knowledge of paleontology, geology, or natural history relevant to the region.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and diverse age groups.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in an outdoor setting.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Environmental Science, Biology, Geology, or a related field.
  • Previous experience leading educational programs or working with youth groups.
  • Familiarity with the flora, fauna, and geological history of central Ohio.
  • Bilingual abilities (e.g., Spanish).
