Job Description

Brooklyn College (CUNY) is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Paleontology & Fossil Preparation Intern to join our Earth and Environmental Sciences department. This internship offers a unique opportunity for aspiring paleontologists to gain practical, hands-on experience in the essential techniques of fossil preparation, curation, and research support. The intern will work closely with faculty and researchers, contributing to ongoing projects involving fossilized specimens from various geological periods. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates passionate about paleontology and museum studies, eager to develop crucial skills in a professional academic setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the mechanical preparation of fossil specimens using air scribes, hand tools, and other specialized equipment.
  • Learn and apply conservation techniques to stabilize delicate fossil materials.
  • Participate in the organization and cataloging of fossil collections, ensuring accurate data entry and specimen labeling.
  • Support laboratory maintenance, including cleaning tools, equipment, and work areas.
  • Conduct basic literature reviews to assist ongoing research projects.
  • Document preparation progress through photography and detailed notes.
  • Adhere to strict safety protocols and ethical guidelines for fossil handling and preservation.
  • Engage in departmental seminars and discussions to broaden paleontological knowledge.

Required Skills

  • Strong interest in paleontology, geology, or related natural sciences.
  • Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work meticulously and patiently on delicate materials.
  • Basic computer proficiency for data entry and record keeping.
  • Reliable and able to follow instructions precisely.
  • Enrollment in or recent graduation from an undergraduate program in Biology, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
