Job Description

We are seeking an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as the Chair of the Music Department within the College of Fine Arts. The Music Department Chair will provide strategic leadership, administrative oversight, and artistic direction for all departmental programs, faculty, and students. This pivotal role requires a deep commitment to music education, scholarly pursuit, and artistic performance, fostering an environment of creativity, collaboration, and excellence. The successful candidate will be instrumental in shaping the future of music education at Wichita State University, advocating for the department, and engaging with both the university and the broader community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership for the Music Department, aligning with college and university goals.
  • Oversee curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation processes for all music programs (undergraduate and graduate).
  • Manage departmental budget, resources, and facilities effectively.
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate faculty, fostering professional growth and development.
  • Lead fundraising initiatives and cultivate relationships with donors and alumni.
  • Represent the department within the college, university, and external professional organizations.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the department's programs and practices.
  • Teach courses in an area of expertise as needed, maintaining scholarly or creative activity.
  • Oversee student recruitment, advisement, and retention efforts.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive environment for faculty, staff, and students.

Required Skills

  • Doctorate in Music (DMA, Ph.D., or equivalent) in a relevant field.
  • Significant experience in university-level teaching and administration within a music department.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly/creative achievement commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Proven leadership and management abilities, including budget oversight and personnel management.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Strong commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with fundraising and donor relations.
  • Familiarity with national and regional music accreditation standards.
  • A record of successful program development and innovation.
  • Experience in community engagement and outreach programs.
  • Proficiency in music technology relevant to modern pedagogical practices.
