Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Paleontology Technician to join our field research team. This is an immediate hire position for individuals eager to engage in hands-on paleontological excavation and laboratory processing. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the discovery, recovery, and initial preparation of fossil specimens from various geological formations across Maine. This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and a strong interest in paleontology and earth sciences.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in paleontological fieldwork, including excavation, screening, and documentation of fossil localities.
- Operate and maintain field equipment suchs as shovels, picks, chisels, and plaster jackets.
- Record detailed field notes, photographs, and GPS data for all collected specimens and sites.
- Transport collected specimens from field sites to the laboratory safely and efficiently.
- Perform initial cleaning, repair, and stabilization of fossil specimens in the laboratory.
- Assist with cataloging and organizing fossil collections.
- Adhere to strict safety protocols and ethical guidelines for fossil collection and preservation.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and supervisors on all project tasks.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED.
- At least 1 year of experience in fieldwork, archaeology, geology, or paleontology.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor in various weather conditions and challenging terrain.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic knowledge of geological principles and fossil identification.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to remote field sites.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Paleontology, Biology, Anthropology, or a related field.
- Experience with GIS software or mapping tools.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience using specialized paleontological tools and techniques (e.g., plaster jacketing, microfossil screening).
