Job Description
The Educational Paleontology Outreach Specialist plays a pivotal role in delivering engaging and educational paleontological programs to schools and educational groups primarily within the Decatur, GA area and surrounding communities. This role involves bringing the excitement of paleontology directly to students through hands-on activities, presentations, and fossil demonstrations, enhancing their understanding of Earth’s ancient past and the science behind it. You will be responsible for tailoring content to various age groups, managing program logistics, and ensuring a memorable and impactful learning experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver interactive paleontology-focused educational programs for K-12 school groups both on-site at the museum and at external school locations.
- Create, organize, and maintain educational materials, including fossil replicas, genuine specimens, and engaging presentation aids.
- Manage all aspects of program scheduling, logistics, and equipment transport for off-site outreach initiatives.
- Actively collaborate with educators and school administrators to ensure programs are aligned with current curriculum standards.
- Provide engaging, accurate, and up-to-date information about paleontology, geology, and broader evolutionary science.
- Collect valuable feedback from participants and educators to continuously improve program content and delivery methods.
- Ensure the highest standards of safety and appropriate handling of all educational materials and participants during all programs.
- Assist with other museum education initiatives, special events, and outreach efforts as needed to support the department's goals.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated foundational knowledge of paleontology, geology, or other related earth sciences.
- Exceptional verbal communication and compelling public speaking skills, particularly effective with children and young adults.
- Proven ability to develop and deliver engaging, age-appropriate educational content to diverse audiences.
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail, essential for managing program logistics and educational materials.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a cohesive team in various educational settings.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation are essential for outreach activities and program delivery.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Education, or a closely related scientific field.
- Prior hands-on experience in museum education, science communication, or teaching K-12 students.
- Experience with curriculum development and ensuring alignment with state educational standards.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
