Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and organized Public Sector Fleet Dispatcher to join our Transport Department. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the efficient coordination and dispatch of city vehicles and personnel, ensuring timely service delivery and optimal resource utilization. This position requires strong communication skills, an ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, and a commitment to public service. You will be the central point of contact for field personnel, managing their assignments, tracking fleet movements, and responding to urgent requests. Your keen eye for detail and ability to make quick decisions will ensure that the City’s operations run smoothly and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and prioritize service requests for vehicle and equipment dispatch from various City departments.
  • Assign and dispatch vehicles, equipment, and personnel to various job sites and service calls.
  • Monitor the location and status of fleet vehicles using GPS and communication systems to ensure timely arrivals and efficient routing.
  • Maintain accurate dispatch logs, vehicle records, and service schedules, ensuring all documentation is up-to-date and compliant.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with field personnel, supervisors, and other departments to ensure seamless operations and resolve issues.
  • Coordinate with maintenance staff for vehicle repairs and service scheduling to minimize downtime and ensure fleet readiness.
  • Respond promptly to emergency situations and adjust dispatch plans as needed, prioritizing critical incidents.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, departmental policies, and city ordinances.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on dispatch activities, fleet status, and operational efficiency.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in dispatching, logistics coordination, or a related field, preferably within a public sector or transportation environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and concisely.
  • Proficiency in using dispatch software, GPS tracking systems, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities, capable of handling multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and make sound decisions under pressure and in fast-paced situations.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License with a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Logistics, Transportation Management, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience working specifically in a public sector or government fleet management environment.
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance schedules and fleet management principles.
  • Familiarity with the geographical layout and traffic patterns of Oceanside and surrounding areas.
  • Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish/English) to better serve our diverse community.
