Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Pharmacy Purchasing Agent to join our dedicated supply chain team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for managing the procurement, inventory, and distribution of pharmaceutical products, ensuring cost-effectiveness, quality, and compliance with all regulations. The ideal candidate will possess strong negotiation skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a deep understanding of pharmacy operations and supply chain logistics. This position offers an opportunity to contribute significantly to patient care by ensuring that essential medications are available when and where they are needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the procurement process for all pharmaceutical products, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and medical supplies.
  • Negotiate with vendors and suppliers to secure favorable pricing, terms, and delivery schedules.
  • Monitor inventory levels, conduct regular stock checks, and implement strategies to minimize waste and optimize storage.
  • Process purchase orders, verify invoices, and resolve discrepancies with suppliers.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to pharmaceutical purchasing and controlled substances.
  • Collaborate with pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to forecast demand and address supply needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of all purchasing activities and inventory data.
  • Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising quality or patient safety.
  • Stay informed about market trends, new products, and changes in pharmaceutical regulations.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in pharmaceutical purchasing or supply chain management within a healthcare setting.
  • Proven negotiation and vendor management skills.
  • Strong understanding of inventory management principles and systems.
  • Proficiency with pharmacy information systems and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel).
  • Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to pharmaceutical procurement (e.g., DEA, FDA, 340B program).
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
  • Certification in Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) or Supply Chain Management (e.g., CSCP, CPIM).
  • Experience with specific hospital pharmacy purchasing software.
  • Familiarity with GPO contracts and purchasing agreements.
